Vera Bradley is an American handbag, luggage, and fashion design company which had been established by Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley Baekgaard in 1982. It has more than 156 stores worldwide. Headquarter of Vera Bradley is located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, United States. The data of Vera Bradley has been breached by the hackers. Breached data contains payment card details of its customers. The forensic experts of security firm Mandiant are investigating this incident. They have confirmed that the credit and debit card details of Vera Bradley customers are in the hands of hackers.
When Company Came To Know About This Breach?
According to a report of Company, they came to know about the security risk related to their payment card systems on15 September 2016. FBI told the company about this major data security issue which was happening at all of its stores and outlets. To investigate this security issue, the company immediately hired a security firm Mandiant to know the reasons and facts about this data breach.
How did it happen?
According to Forensic Experts and Security Researchers of Mandiant, "A malicious program was available in payment processing systems of the company. This malware was keeping eye on the payment card details and transactions. It was collecting the payment card details and was sending it toward the hackers through command servers. Not all the payment cards have been affected by this malware. We are still investigating this incident and trying to find more footprints."
This data breach affected the database of Vera Bradley's 156 stores and outlets. Customers, who did the shopping at Vera Bradley's stores between 25 July 2016 and 24 September 2016 are the victims. The actual number of affected users is not yet clear. That customer, who did the shopping through official websites of Vera Bradley are safe because this data breach is not related to the website.
Which Type of Malware it Was?
The malware was specially designed by hackers to steal the track data from the magnetic stripe of credit cards and debit cards. Initially, the network of Vera Bradley was hacked by hackers and after that, they installed this malware in the server which was controlling the payment systems of all company stores. This malware was stealing Card Number, Card Holder Name, CVV Number, PIN and Card Expiry Date. Hackers were controlling this malware through remote command.
Vera Bradley's Message to Its Customers
According to Company, not all payments cards have been affected by this malware. The company has advised its affected customers to track all the payment transactions of their payment cards. If customers are finding any suspicious transactions, they need to visit the banks. Moreover, they can block that payment cards and can get a new one.
All the customers have been notified by the company. The company also said, "Security experts are still working on our payment processing systems to stop this type of attacks. We hope, this type of incidents will not happen in future again.
